LEAD Summit ChangeMaker Luncheon

The LEAD Summit is a partnership between the Austin Young Chamber Foundation and the
Austin Young Chamber to meet the needs of young professionals in Central Texas.

Millennials recently passed baby-boomers as the largest segment of the workforce and are expected to make up 75% of the workforce by 2025. Yet only 20% of organizations identified the millennial leaders segment as critical for development. In response, the LEAD Summit was created to convene like-minded young professionals in Central Texas and connect them with leadership building opportunities.

The LEAD Summit (Learn | Explore | Act | Develop) is a one-day event that combines both learning and action. The summit will create positive change by educating and connecting young professionals with influential business leaders, the community, and each other. The LEAD Summit is where the best get better.


ChangeMaker Luncheon

The Austin Young Chamber recognizes and pays tribute to those who are doing extraordinary things to make our community a better place. ChangeMakers are thought-leaders and do-ers who create innovative solutions to community or industry challenges. Heath and Alyssa Padgett
“How We Built Our Business & Lives from a Winnebago”

During their first year of marriage, Heath & Alyssa traveled to all 50 states filming a documentary called Hourly America where Heath worked an hourly job in each state while Alyssa filmed the adventure. Their documentary work has been featured on CNN, CBS, Fox, Forbes and has led to consulting work with brands like Chick-fil-A, UPS, and Winnebago.

Heath and Alyssa Padgett have been living, working and traveling in an RV since their wedding day in May of 2014. According to their parents, they are on permanent-vacation. According to Heath and Alyssa, they work everyday. There is probably a middle ground of truth here.

Together they run HeathandAlyssa.com, one of the most popular RV lifestyle blogs. Heath hosts The RV Entrepreneur podcast, where he interviews fellow full-time RVers on what it’s like running a business while traveling full-time. Heath is the CEO of Campground Booking, a software company he started from their Winnebago, while Alyssa manages their production company, Padgett Creative. They also host an annual conference for nomadic entrepreneurs called The RV Entrepreneur Summit.

    This session, based on the book: “Make your Brain Smarter” by Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman, will demonstrate our inability to multi-task effectively. We will present nine strategies for maximizing our brain’s capacity for performance. Students will become aware of the dangers of multi-tasking and how to lead their teams (and themselves) away from this toxic habit. Through the session, students will learn to engage our creative capabilities to formulate innovative strategies and solutions, provide others with necessary empowerment, resources, support, and motivation to take action, and hone their question asking skills.

    About Heather
    HeatherMcKissickDeeply involved in community affairs in the Central Texas area, Heather McKissick serves as Vice President of Community Impact for University Federal Credit Union (UFCU), which itself is one of the most committed community organizations in Austin and Central Texas.

    When Heather joined UFCU in 2013 as Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Development, she was already an experienced advocate and community leader after serving for seven years as a volunteer and then five years as Chief Executive Officer of Leadership Austin. For decades, Leadership Austin has trained thousands of local residents in community issues and leadership through its programs, and Heather came to know just about everyone who went through the development programs during her years of service.

    Part of Heather’s current role at UFCU is to lead the organization’s engagement with the Austin area, as well as the Coastal Region, where UFCU serves the University of Texas Medical Branch and other credit union members. A second element of Heather’s responsibilities is to lead a team that develops relationships with Central Texas colleges and universities, with the UT Dell Medical School, and with a variety of other select employment groups (SEGs) whose members want access to UFCU’s services.

    An honored community leader herself, Heather is well-qualified to head these efforts for UFCU. She is a member of the board of the American Heart and Stroke Association of Central Texas; the Young Women’s Alliance community advisory board (and their 2013 “Inspiring Leader of the Year”); and chair of the advisory council for the Austin Young Chamber of Commerce. She served as chair of the Heart Association’s 2017 “Go Red for Women” campaign; as honorary co-chair with Austin Mayor Steve Adler of the 2016 “Austin Under 40” awards; was the inaugural “Austin Under 40 Mentor of the Year” honoree; a “Women of Distinction” honoree in 2014 by the Girl Scouts of Central Texas, and a recipient of a 2010 “Profiles in Power” award. She is also a proud Credit Union Development Educator.
