Join us for our monthly Speaker Series luncheon. We are excited to hear from Charles Thornburgh!
Deeply influenced by parents and grand parents who were prominent civil rights activists, social justice revolutionaries, and unrelenting optimists, Charles felt the urge toward social justice at the same time his father –a life-long entrepreneur – inspired him make his own way, think deeply, and take risks. By the time Charles graduated high school and entered Stanford University, he had been trained to earn anything he wanted, and to ask what good his work was doing for others. He worked his way through Stanford as a test prep instructor, and in doing so, he fell in love with education. When the owners of the company he worked for offered to sell it to him upon graduation (entirely for debt), he accepted the challenge and began a career of ed-tech entrepreneurship that resulted in a string of successes including the purchase of his business by Kaplan Education, who retained him for several years as in-house entrepreneur.
During his time at Kaplan, he became acutely aware of the massive potential in unused or underutilized disparate sources of student data. In 2011, he launched Civitas Learning, one of the fastest growing ed-tech startups in history with the goal of leveraging the best of design thinking, data science and predictive analytics to help a million more students a year learn well, finish with a degree, and go on to brighter futures and careers.
Civitas Learning is the Student Success Platform for higher education. The Platform comprises the most statistically rigorous technology in the market today to provide a clear view of the current and future state of colleges and universities, as well as the students they serve. Faculty, administrators and students are empowered to act with confidence and make the most of their time, energy and investment. Under Charles’ leadership, the Civitas community includes more than 285 colleges, universities and systems across the globe, with a reach of more than 6.5 million students.
